THE LIBRARY
With more than 3,000 references and after a rigorous acquisition and documentation work, the Instituto Autor has one of the most important collections specialised in Intellectual Property in Spain.
The library includes books, manuals, journals, case law and legislation directories and other documents relating to Spanish law as well as other European Union countries, Latin America and third countries. The library also contains the Instituto Autor’s own publications.
The collection has recently been enriched, thanks to the loan from his family, with the personal library of Prof. Dr. Ramón Casas Vallés, professor of Civil Law at the University of Barcelona. Ramón Casas Vallès (Barcelona, 1956 – Vilafranca del Penedés 2021) was one of the most relevant personalities and leading experts in intellectual property law, both in Spain and abroad. In 2021 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture, becoming the first jurist to receive this distinction.
The library is located at the headquarters of the Instituto Autor (Calle Bárbara de Braganza, nº7). Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Friday (except holidays).

BIBLIOGRAPHIC COLLECTIONS
Divided into three collections (the General Collection of the Instituto Autor, the Publications Collection of the Editorial Instituto Autor, and the Ramón Casas Vallès Library, incorporated in March 2024), the documents of the Instituto Autor Library contain a wide variety of bibliographic resources:
- Legal monographs and manuals
- Legal journals
- Repertories of jurisprudence and legislation
- Acts, reports, papers and working documents from congresses, public bodies, and international organisations.
The General Collection brings together the documents acquired since the creation of the Instituto Autor, to which the books edited by the publishing house of the Instituto Autor have been added, including the works awarded with the Antonio Delgado Prize, as well as other resources that spread relevant aspects of Intellectual Property for authors and other operators in the sector. The Ramón Casas Vallès Collection is made up of all the works dedicated to intellectual property within the abundant legal library of Professor Casas Vallès. It has been relocated from his home, and we have tried to respect as far as possible the original placement made by Professor Casas Vallès.
OPAC and SEARCH ENGINE
The online public access catalogue of the Library of the Instituto Autor is the online consultation tool that allows you to identify, locate and consult, in real time, the availability of any document in the library’s collection. The catalogue, made up of the records of the different information sources available in the library, provides the main bibliographic data of the catalogued sources (in addition to the standard ISBD view) and can be searched in free text and by various criteria (such as author, title or subject, ISBN, publisher and year of publication).
Once the search has been carried out, the system allows the user to save the search results and book an appointment to consult the documents in person in the library’s own reading room. The documents are for consultation only at our headquarters and cannot be borrowed from outside the library.
Search instructions.
The catalogue is permanently available for consultation by the public through the online public access search engine.
All the items shown in the search results are available for consultation in person at our headquarters. No outside loan is allowed.
If you wish to make an in-person consultation at the Library, you can request and schedule the desired day and time through this link:
SIMPLE SEARCH:
COLLECTION TYPE SELECTOR
To search all collections, select “All”.
Select the corresponding option to narrow the search to the General Collection of the Instituto Autor, the Ramon Casas Library, or the Publications of the Instituto Autor.
FREE SEARCH FIELD
Allows you to search in a single field (title, author, subject, publisher…), or in all the above fields simultaneously, by entering words or phrases in the search box.
The steps to follow to perform a quick search are as follows:
- Go to the home page and position yourself in the search box at the top of the screen.
- Enter a word or phrase in the text area that identifies the content you wish to locate.
- Click the Search button.
The search will be performed among all the records in the catalogue, including the titles, subtitles and articles of Journals, Collections, Repertories and Books, as well as the other associated data included in the description of each document.
Remember that if you want to perform an exact search, you must use quotation marks before and after the search terms.
Example:
If you want to search for content by author Julia Perez, type “Julia Perez” with quotation marks. If you do not use them, the search engine will offer results that match Julia Perez, Julia, and Perez. If you want to search for a publisher, author, or subject, we recommend using the specific fields (fields with automatic suggestions).
FIELDS WITH AUTOMATIC SUGGESTIONS:
Typing in the Publisher, Author and Subject fields will display the existing options in the database. The platform has a predictive search engine, so that as the user enters words, the search engine will display the matches found in the catalogue. Select the option you are interested in adding to the field.
Example:
If you want to search for an author whose last name is Perez, when you start typing, all authors containing “Perez” will be displayed. The drop-down menu allows you to select the author from the list to obtain more precise results.
ADVANCED SEARCH:
The search engine allows searches using specific criteria, such as fund type, author, title, publisher, subjects, and year of publication.
Example:
Collection type: “General Collection”
Free field: “Art”.
Publisher: “Bercal”.
Subject “Collective Management Entities”.
The terms included in these fields will be displayed in the results as options that can be deactivated to expand the list of results.
In the previous case, if “Entidades de Gestión Colectiva” is eliminated, the results are automatically updated, keeping the initial search terms: “Fondo General +Arte + Bercal”.
Multiple subject search:
On the results page you can add more than one subject to narrow down the results. Search for the subject in the corresponding field and click “Search”. The added subjects can be removed individually to expand the search results.
Save or share Results:
Finally, the search results may be saved by clicking on the “share” icon and thus copying the link to the results page with the selected search terms.
Information sheet for each work
When visiting any result, the different elements that make up the descriptive card will be displayed. Along with this information, access to other related documents will also be provided:
- Works by the same author
- Fascicles of the same journal
- Documents related to the same subject.

RAMÓN CASAS VALLÈS LIBRARY
Thanks to the generosity of his family, the Instituto Autor is the custodian of the IP specialized documents in his personal library, brought from his home in Vilafranca del Penedès, and arranged in such a way as to respect its original configuration, with the aim of making it accessible to any intellectual property scholar who wishes to consult it.
