HISTORY
Ramón Casas Vallès (Barcelona, 1956 – Vilafranca del Penedés 2021) was a Private Law practitioner, professor and researcher, who conducted his professional career in the field of Civil Law, particularly in intellectual property, becoming one of the most relevant personalities and leading experts in intellectual property law, to the point that in 2021 he was awarded the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture, becoming the first legal expert to receive such a distinction.
However, above all his very important academic achievements, the great humanity and kindness of Ramón Casas Vallès stands out. He was a teacher, mentor and excellent companion to generations of Spanish lawyers, guiding countless judges, students, lawyers and professors. He always found a moment to help, guide and advise, with the humility and extreme prudence that characterised him, always with a smile on his face and in his heart.
His tragic and unexpected death left countless orphans, both in our small world of intellectual property practitioners and in the academic world, but his intellectual and, especially, human legacy will live on like a lighthouse in the fog.
Ramón’s family has granted the Instituto Autor the privilege of being the custodian of the specialized documents in his personal library, brought from his home in Vilafranca del Penedès, and arranged in such a way as to respect its original configuration, with the aim of making it accessible to any intellectual property scholar who wishes to consult it.
The Ramón Casas Vallès Library is part of the Instituto Autor Library Project, launched in 2023, which aims at making all the bibliographic resources of the Instituto Autor on intellectual property matters (either digital, audiovisual or physical) freely, easily and intuitively accessible, and which has the support of the Ministry of Culture through the grants for cultural action and promotion 2023 of the Directorate General for Cultural Industries, Intellectual Property and Cooperation.
